2013 Mount Hood Area Travel — 7/22 Columbia River Gorge (三) Wahkeena Falls & Crown Point Vista House

我不得不承認，旅遊前若沒好好的做功課，經常會有過其門而不入的遺憾。每次都是事後在寫遊記時察看細節，才發覺自己錯失了好多很棒的景點而不自知。後悔似乎於事無補，這更加強了我下回在規劃旅遊景點時要更細心，要將所有的功課做足。
但是換個角度來說，旅行中的另一個迷人之處，不就是在於對未知景物的期待和驚喜嗎？很矛盾是嗎？

此時我的相機又沒電了（很不給力的電池，下次回台灣還是多花點錢買原廠的），以下的行程就又全交給女兒幫忙照相了。

這是Wahkeena Falls，分上下兩個。或許是走Eagle Creek已經有點累了，沒留意到這瀑布有Upper Falls（距離不遠處），看到這所謂的Wahkeena Falls，心灰意冷之餘只想趕下一個行程。

結果是，看了女兒的相片才知道，原來Upper Falls就在不遠處，而且也十分漂亮，好可惜錯過了！

Wahkeena Falls is a 242-foot (73 m) waterfall in the Columbia River Gorge in the state of Oregon.
The waterfall is unlike nearby Multnomah Falls in that the water does not directly plunge to the ground. Wahkeena Falls, rather, has a more subtle cascading flow. These falls have been featured in numerous travel guides and in photography books.
Spellings of this name are dubious because the word is an English transliteration of a Native American (reportedly Yakama) phrase meaning most beautiful.
Wahkeena Falls is along the Historic Columbia River Highway, about 13 miles (21 km) east of Troutdale, Oregon. A 0.2-mile (320 m) hike from the parking lot at the base leads to the stone bridge that crosses the main part of the falls.

當初就是以為這是Wahkeena Falls，才會頭也不回的離開，此時才知真是錯怪它了！

但錯過了似乎也沒啥彌補的機會，因為下回我真的不想再來這個觀光名勝之地了，停車真是太累人了！

奧勒岡州真是個不缺瀑布的森林之州！

離開了Wahkeena Falls ，我們朝下一個景點前進。

Crown Point Vista House，這是今天最後一個景點了。

The Vista House was built in 1917 on one of the most beautiful scenic points on the Historic Columbia River Highway. It was constructed to provide travelers a place to rest and refresh themselves as they made their way down the magnificent Columbia River Gorge. 

維基百科這麼說：
Vista House is an observatory Crown Point in Multnomah County, Oregon, that also serves as a memorial to Oregon pioneers and as a comfort station for travelers on the Historic Columbia River Highway. 
The site, on a rocky promontory, is 733 feet (223 m) above the Columbia River on the south side of the Columbia River Gorge. The building shows great sensitivity to its site in the Columbia River Gorge near Corbett and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

這裡居高臨下，遠眺的景觀真是一級棒！

哥倫比亞河似乎就在腳下。

2013 Mount Hood Area Travel — 7/22 Columbia River Gorge (二) U.S. Forest Service interpretive center

U.S. Forest Service interpretive center的空間不大，但是我還滿喜歡這裡的解說。尤其是它把我很在意的野花草做了很好的展示和解說，讓我獲益不少！

Mountain Lady's Slipper，這是蘭花的一種，花朵的形態就如同拖鞋一樣。

Deer's Head Orchid，怎麼也看不出和Deer的頭有任何相似之處。

Indian Pipe，看起來好怪，竟然也是蘭花的一種。

Oregon Stonecrop，原來這就是我們在Eagle Creek看到的奇怪植物，這是葉子，長出長莖之後的應該就是花朵。

Tiger Lily，這花見過幾次。

Western Poison Oak，這植物在Eagle Creek的簡介中也被提及，提醒遊客留意這植物千萬別去觸碰它。

Lupine，這在北美西部幾乎到處都看得到，即使在阿拉斯加也看得到。

2013 Mount Hood Area Travel — 7/22 Columbia River Gorge (一) Multnomah Falls

從Eagle Creek上I-84，我們要繼續前一天為完成的Columbia River Gorge的瀑布之旅。

這片水草地鮮綠豐美應該是個公園吧，但是手上的資料翻來翻去看了幾次還是沒查到，難道是私人的高爾夫球場？

若真的這只供少數人使用，還真是可惜！

即使只用眼睛看這片草地，都相信若能在其中翻滾會有多舒服。

下高速公路，我們開在Historic Columbia River Highway（30），這條路車非常多，但路十分狹窄，很容易塞車。
再則，RV可千萬別開來這裡。親眼看到一台【顧人怨RV】，因為車身過寬卡在車陣中動彈不得，還需要交通警察出馬指揮大夥倒車，撤退到幾乎不存在的路肩，才讓他們在眾人的咒罵噓聲中通過。（他們當然是一路頻頻道歉）

說真的，之所以規劃這條旅遊路線是因為這鼎鼎大名的Multnomah Falls（第一次在別人的部落格中看到真是驚為天人）。但真正到此一遊才知道這條所謂Historic Columbia River Highway上的瀑布其實不那麼適合我們，有些甚至言過其實。

人潮應該是第一個讓我們無法忍受的。停車位十分稀少，路狹窄到很難找到路肩，為了看一座瀑布，車子在停車場繞了又繞，等了又等，感覺自己好像回到了台灣夜市。

說是夜市雖有些誇張但不為過，因為這裡的遊客真的和夜市遊客的族群十分相似。Hiking中幾乎沒見過的黑人、中東裔、步伐蹣跚的胖子、手握可樂腳踩高跟鞋的拉丁美洲裔都在這裡見到了，耳邊有各式聽不懂的語言之外，中國人的大聲喧嘩也沒錯過。

這雖然讓我想起了Yellowstone，但它不像Yellowstone佔地那麼大讓人有喘口氣的空間（至少許多地方是一日遊觀光客走不到的），我們必須和他們共處在這小小的腹地，全擠在一起，遊興盡失！

Multnomah Falls Lodge built in 1925, the lodge also has excellent views and is home to a restaurant, gift shop, espresso bar and U.S. Forest Service interpretive center.

照片中的建築物就是Multnomah Falls Lodge，其中有個簡介中心。U.S. Forest Service interpretive center邊就是奧勒岡中第一（落差最大）的Multnomah Falls！

In a state where water regularly flows down from upon high, Multnomah Falls— all 620 feet (189 m) of it —stands above the rest as Oregon’s tallest waterfall. Located just 30 miles (48 km) east of downtown Portland along the Historic Columbia River Highway, the two-drop cascade attracts visitors of all types and ages, with both wheelchair-accessible viewing platforms and steep hiking trails that lead all the way to the top. Fed by rainwater and snowmelt, the falls’ steady stream runs year-round, making it a year-round attraction. The highest volume comes in winter and spring, and the waterfall sometimes freezes partially at the height of winter.

受限於相機和技巧，照片的品質實在有些慘不忍睹。還好網友們可以在Google裡查看圖片，許多照片拍得好棒絕對會讓你有到此一遊的念頭產生。

Many visitors make the 1/4-mile hike up to the Benson Bridge, a photogenic foot-crossing built in 1914 by lumber baron Simon Benson, which spans the falls’ second drop. Not just a great place to enjoy the view, it’s also perfect for catching your breath before forging ahead to the top.

當然你也可以走去橋那邊，更近距離的觀賞瀑布，但看到那麼多人，十在無心在去湊熱鬧了！

馬特諾瑪瀑布是位於哥倫比亞河峽谷南岸（俄勒岡州）的一個瀑布。瀑布主要分為兩段，其中一段在542英尺（165公尺）處，緊接著的一段在69英尺（21公尺）處，兩段瀑布中間有一段9英尺（3米）的斜坡，因此一般認為整個瀑布的落差為620英尺（189公尺）。馬特諾瑪瀑布是俄勒岡州落差最大的瀑布。瀑布附近有一個標誌，上面標記著該瀑布是美國第二高的全年性瀑布，不過有瀑布方面的專家反對這一說法。

遊客太多，想找個好方位照相都是一位難求！
